Pain-Free Dentistry: Drill-Free Laser Fillings

At La Jolla Center for Advanced Dentistry, we are able to prepare teeth to receive fillings with the revolutionary PowerLase AT laser system. which takes the place of conventional hand-held dental drills. The PowerLase AT is the world’s most precise dental laser, allowing our dentists to use one of two different wavelengths at any given time, depending on whether they are performing a soft tissue or hard tissue procedure.

In the case of a filling procedure, they would use the Er:YAG 2940 nanometer wavelength to prepare your tooth. What does this mean for you? Setting aside the science behind the technology, it means that you will experience none of the vibrations, sounds, or discomfort associated with a traditional dental labor. Indeed, the PowerLase AT is so gentle that you won’t even require an anesthetic shot prior to treatment. You will simply relax as we efficiently and painlessly remove any damaged material from your tooth and then restore the tooth with a natural-looking composite resin material.

You will emerge from treatment with your smile healthy and once again intact, without the lingering effects of anesthesia.

Single-Visit CEREC® Crowns

Our in-office CEREC® grinding and milling system offers numerous unique benefits, the most important of which is that you can have a stunning, custom-crafted dental crown in a single visit. Traditionally, dental crowns require at least two visits to complete: the first, to prepare your tooth for a crown and then make a wax impression to send to a lab; the second, to place the crown on top of the prepared tooth after it had returned from the lab. The time between visits could be as long as two weeks, during which you would have to wear a temporary crown.

With single-visit CEREC® dental crowns. your crown will be created from the finest ceramic materials for you literally while you wait. On the very same day that you enter our office to have your tooth prepared for the placement of your crown, you will emerge with your beautiful new crown bonded and ready to reveal to the world. Mind you, the world won’t necessarily know that it’s seeing a crown, because Dr. Kim and Dr. Gile use the CEREC® system to create restorations that are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

You do not have to worry about sacrificing quality for speed when it comes to CEREC® crowns, either. A customized CEREC® crown is every bit as strong, durable, and aesthetically pleasing as a crown manufactured in even the finest laboratory. Plus, because the impressions used to guide the CEREC machine are created using digital scanning technology rather than messy dental putty, the results are remarkably and consistently accurate.

CEREC® can also be used to craft other restorations, including inlays, onlays, and dental bridges.

Laser Gum Treatment

The development of dental lasers is the best thing ever to happen to the delicate periodontal, or gum, tissues. Dental lasers are able to remove or make incisions in gum tissue with outstanding precision, sealing blood vessels and nerve endings immediately, which reduces the risk of post-procedural swelling, bleeding, and pain.

Our dental laser at La Jolla Center for Advanced Dentistry can be used in a variety of periodontal treatments, from uncovering wisdom teeth that have yet to erupt and removing lip pulls that are causing alignment problems to performing tissue biopsies. It can also be used for cosmetic purposes ; for instance, it can be used to make a jagged gum line more even or to improve the appearance of a “gummy” smile .

Invisalign® Clear Aligners

The Invisalign® system is a highly effective, aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional wire-and-bracket metal braces for patients who wish to address misalignment, malocclusion, or other orthodontic issues. Invisalign® treatment involves the use of a series of clear, custom-made orthodontic aligners that are designed to gently but definitively guide the teeth toward their optimal positions in the mouth. Every two weeks, the patient switches out the current set of aligners for the next in the series, thereby moving his or her teeth a bit closer to their ideal alignment.

Although Invisalign® is surely best known for being a virtually undetectable method of aligning the teeth, the technology offers other benefits, as well. First, patients are allowed to remove the aligners for eating, which means that they face no dietary restrictions, unlike patients who wear metal braces. Second, the aligners can be removed for proper brushing and flossing, allowing patients to maintain good oral hygiene during treatment. Finally, quite unlike the metal used in braces, the clear plastic of which the aligners are composed is smooth and completely comfortable. Patients don’t have to worry about cuts, scrapes, and sores.

Although not all patients with orthodontic problems are suitable candidates for Invisalign® treatment, most patients with mild to moderate cases of misalignment, gapping, or malocclusion are able to benefit from treatment as long as they use the aligners precisely as advised.

Laser Cavity Detection with DIAGNOdent®

As with most dental conditions, cavities are easiest to treat in their earliest stages, before they have the opportunity to compromise the structural integrity of a tooth too extensively. The DIAGNOdent® laser cavity detector allows Dr. Kim and Dr. Gile to identify even the smallest cavities, often before they present any symptoms or are visible at all to the naked eye. By having cavities treated before they have the chance to progress, you can help to keep your smile healthy and radiant and avoid more costly and involved dental procedures in the future (not to mention, far more painful cavities).

The DIAGNOdent® is just one example of the advanced diagnostic tools we feature in our La Jolla dental office. Our dentists use only the latest technologies in the critical diagnostic and planning stages of our patients’ care.
